The Town council of Coaña is located on the northern basin of the western edge of the Cantabrian Mountains. Situated in the Principality of Asturias, it belongs to the Parque Histórico del Navia (Navia river Historic District), together with other eight councils.
Its climate is Atlantic with heavy rainfalls, about 1000 litres/m2 throughout the year but reducing slightly in summertime. Coaña occupies an area of 65,80 km2 and its 4.383 inhabitants are settled in the biggest villages of the different parishes that conform this council: Trelles, Villacondide, Coaña, Folgueras, Cartavio, Mohías and Lebredo.
Two areas can be distinguished: the coastal area and the inland area. The coast is characterized by its rugged cliffs, estuaries and beaches.
It is worth mentioning the sandy beaches in the area of Ortiguera and the pebble beaches in the westernmost area of the council.

HOW TO GET THERE
The council of Coaña is well communicated. The main road N-634 crosses the council from east to west along the coast, and this road is connected through the highway A-8 to the east. With the motorway A-66 and with the road N-640 and highway A-6 to the west
The way out of the highway A-8 to the Council is the number 483 (in both directions)
Besides, there is a wide network of local and county roads, the AS-12 stands out on the east of the council.
- Railway Line FEVE
The railway line Oviedo-Ferrol crosses the council along the coast providing several daily services in both directions. There are halts in Medal, Loza and Cartavio.

There is a coach stop in front of the Regional Hospital of Jarrio if you travel either towards Ribadeo (Galicia) or towards Oviedo.
